about us

We’re Andrew and Diana. We've visited 43 countries together in the 22 years we've been married. And we've used nearly every mode of travel you can think of: plane, train, automobile, ferry, helicopter, aerial tram, canoe, even camel (well, that last one was only Diana). But never cruise ship. That is, until 2017 when Andrew’s parents invited us on a family cruise to Alaska. We went, not reluctantly, but definitely somewhat skeptically. We were always those people who thought cruising wasn’t for us. And... We absolutely loved cruising! It opened up a whole new world of travel for us.

Calling All Ports is our cruise travel YouTube channel and blog, where we share our plunge into the world of cruising. Unlike many cruise YouTubers who tout their many years and dozens of voyages as support for why you should follow them, we're coming to the world of cruising as outsiders. We're experienced world travelers yet relatively "new-to-cruise." So we've created Calling All Ports to document our initiation into the world of regular cruise travel. If you're one of those people who is hesitant or uneasy about taking a cruise, like we were not too long ago, let Calling All Ports acquaint you with the pastime. Or if you're a seasoned regular cruiser, please nostalgically follow our wide-eyed excitement as we experience various cruising "firsts" - and feel free to laugh along with us from time-to-time as we inevitably make some rookie cruise passenger mistakes.

What exactly can you expect from Calling All Ports? We deliver regular videos covering all aspects of the cruise travel experience… we share our embarkation experiences; full ship and cabin tours; reviews of the food and dining options; the on-board entertainment and activities; highlights from our excursions; and even the occasional immersive, cinematic scenic short film. And as we gain more experience, we'll share some of the lessons we've learned, tips and tricks, errors to avoid, and more.

We’re cruise omnivores. We're up for traveling on all the lines, from the mainstream mega-ships up through the ultra-luxury small ships. We’re interested in the traditional ocean vessels, of course, but also specialty cruises like river line and expedition ships. We're calling ourselves "calling all ports," after all: we're eager to try every type of cruise experience on offer, and travel anywhere a cruise ship will take us.

A little about us personally… we're both college professors now, living in upstate New York (United States). Andrew is an Associate Professor of Media Studies at SUNY Oneonta (State University of New York); check out his professional website, if you’re at all curious. Diana is an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies, also at SUNY Oneonta, and on the verge of completing her Ph.D. at the University at Albany. We've each previously worked in different aspects of the media industries, in film, music, journalism, magazine publishing, podcasting and radio broadcasting. Andrew was a music and entertainment journalist for many years. He also worked in film production for the director Martin Scorsese, plus in film preservation and media education with the nonprofit organization The Film Foundation. Diana worked in public relations, and she also had a whole other career as an early childhood teacher. So we bring our backgrounds in education and also media-making and storytelling here to Calling All Ports, where we hope to create for you informative as well as entertaining videos about our journeys both at sea and on waterways around the globe.
